Ultimate Persona - Laima

Ultimate Persona - Laima

The Persona series is a video game franchise that greatly inspires me for it's great writing and it's entertaining gameplay. What interested me the most about the series is that each party member's persona, while being a fictional or mythical character, represents their personalities and their abilities very well. This representation encouraged me to examine myself and conceptualize what my persona would be if I was in that series.

As I am a time oriented individual, I researched mythical and fictional characters who have an association of time and fate. In this piece, this is what I imagine to be what my ultimate persona - the most powerful form a party member's persona can achieve - would be - the Baltic goddess of fate, Laima.

Capstone Project - Juxtaposition

In my multimedia capstone class, a project we had to do was a visual juxtaposition; we needed to take two constrasting concepts and make a piece out of it. I decided to focus on fantasy subversions and ultimately decided on having a fairy godmother turning little princesses into little business women. To make the image feel more child-like, I decided to emulate the appearance and texture of construction paper, mainly using solid shapes and only using line to define shapes.

Sleiphra, Queen of the Sprites

Photoshop
11" x 17" 300 dpi

Sleiphra is a minor character who appears in my game Soul Link. I utilized a more painting-esque style for the piece to give off a more calming energy to the piece. While I did take inspiration from mermaid and fairy designs, Sleiphra's design is meant to invoke an otherworldly presence - something not quite human, but not threatening.
The flowers in the illustration are white camellias. As Sleiphra plays an important role in one of the major side quests, I wanted to give a subtle hint to what occurs to her within the quest.

Fear and Facade - A Sonic Forces Fan-Comic

Photoshop

One of my favorite video game series is the Sonic the Hedgehog series; this is the series that made me seriously interested in video games. When I played Sonic Forces, I was impressed with how they handled the development of the Avatar character and how well they wrote the villian Infinite. However, I felt the game's ending was both lacking and rushed as the fate of both Eggman and Infinite was left unaddressed and was disappointed with how the writers failed to maintain the game's serious tone.
Inspired by the fan art I saw for Sonic Forces, and wanting to improve my storytelling skills, I decided to make a comic based on the game's ending while also illustrating my own interpretation of what became of Infintite. This comic challenged my writing skill as I not only had to define my avatar's personality but also aimed have dialogue that neither sounded forced nor cliche. Additionally, I had to seriously analyze Infinite as a character despite having very little material in regards to his motivations and past.
This comic also challenged me artistically. I decided to use a shading style similar to a fan comic called Ghosts of the Future. I had not used a shading style like this before and so I had to learn how to make the shading appear well. Additionally, I challenged myself to finish a page every two days. While a few pages took longer than 2 days, I did manage to maintain the 2-day deadlines overall.

The Will Within

My capstone class's final project was holding an artshow and each student was required to not only participate in the show's set up but also submit at least 3 pieces for the show. Additionally, to illustrate our show's theme of rewinding to a previous point in time, one of the pieces had to be a recreation of an older piece, regardless of the medium and regardless of the original's age. I decided to recreate a piece I made in a sketchbook for one of my college classes. The original piece is not too different in composition or how it is drawn; the major differences between the two pieces are the original piece was purely traditional while this incorporated digital editing and the original piece had the phrase "The will within." I went with this piece as not only is it easy to recreate but also provides practice in mixing traditional and digital techniques.

Capstone Project - Logo

Pencil/Photoshop/Illustrator
Various Sizes

My capstone class was tasked to conceptualize and design a company logo for ourselves and illustrate how the logo would look on traditional stationary. The company's focus had to be the same as our degree specialization, thus I needed to make a game company logo. We were asked to come up with three company names first and then focus on only one of them to develop more. As seen here, the names I came up with are "Pixel World," "World Builders," and "Open Blocks;" ultimately I went with "World Builders."
For the finalalized logo design, I decided to use elements from my "Pixel World" idea - primarilly the design I noted to have the most potential. Additionally, I decided to go with a space motif for the logo for two reasons. Firstly, it would make the logo design very simple and clean to create and the one lesson my capstone teacher kept emphasizing is keeping designs simple. Secondly, incorperating a planet design in addition to the pixel effect would give the impression that my company is a video game company. For the stationary examples, I looked up stationary templates that were permited for modified reuse.

Character turn - Iora

Photoshop

This is a piece I created for my capstone's art show. The character shown here - Iora Ansley - is a character I created for a one of my video game ideas. I wanted to use her for the character turn as not only did I believe her design was simple enough to work with but I also wanted to have a legitimate reference for her when I begin working on the game. I had not created a character turn before this point, and so this gave me a very strong idea of what I would have to do when designing and conceptualizing characters for a game, movie, or show.

Character Art - Katarina

I took a character design class and we were tasked, week by week, to build up our character and go through the steps of creating one fr production.
